"It Works for Me!" - Jill's Table

"It Works for Me!" - Jill's Table

Jill M: Make "Tooth Fairy Preparedness" a breeze! Jill bought 20 of the $1 gold coins from the bank and stores them in a safe. Every time her kiddos lose a tooth, she goes to the safe and puts one under their pillow!

Amy F: She had terrible morning sickness when she was pregnant with her 2nd child, and her son liked to wake up early. Amy bought some time in the morning by preparing the night before! She packed a small ice chest with a sippy cup of milk, a bag of cheerios, and juice. She set it by her bed with some toys and the t.v. remote. The next morning, her son could eat his breakfast, play, and watch cartoons while she rested a little bit longer!

Samantha W: For easy iced coffee, brew a cup the night before and stick it in the fridge. Pour it over ice the next morning!

Melissa S: Her friend is her own personal "StitchFix!" She shops for her, her husband, and her daughter!

Kathryn F: Ava Anderson's non-toxic diaper cream works for anything and everything. It works for acne, eczema, ect. Sometimes, she even uses it on her baby!

Teresa A: Downey Wrinkle Releaser works for her! Just spray your clothes, pull on the wrinkles, hang, and let dry! It's your new iron!

It Works for Me - Char, Alex, and Amy's Tables!

Charlene H. - To avoid frustration at the breakfast time, turn on Pandora radio! Find some up beat kid music, like KIDZ BOP. It puts the family in a better mood before heading out for the day!

Stephanie E. - Keeps frozen peas on hand and gives them to the kids as an easy veggie option!

Lisa D. - Her daughter has a sticker chart for potty training. She enjoys sticking the stickers on the chart, and if she goes #2, she is rewarded with a marshmallow!

Heidi P. - Wakes up before kids to enjoy a little "me time" with a cup of tea or coffee!

Nicole - Uses flashcards with pictures with her kid's morning chores (ie- get dressed, brush teeth, ect.). Sometimes it helps the morning go a little smoother.

Rosa M. - 1.) To avoid eating out, she always has a homemade frozen meal stocked in the freezer. 2.) Gives her kids a pomegranate in the backyard for a snack/activity. It keeps them entertained for a bit.

Eileen P. - Read stories and nursery rhymes to her kids before nap or bedtime. This would help the kids calm down before they rest. They enjoyed picking out their favorite books to read and also learned to recite the nursery rhymes by heart.

Alex G. - To keep her 18 month old from climbing out of his crib, she cut up a onesie and attached it to the feel of her son's footed pj's. Now, he can't climb out of his crib!

Trisha - Her toddler is a picky eater, so she found a delicious gluten-free banana muffin recipe that she enjoys eating!

Sara P. - Uses coconut oil for diaper rash cream, cooking, smoothies, hair conditioner, shaving, eye make-up remover, and to whiten her teeth (with baking soda).

Lauren - She pre-makes breakfast burritos with eggs, sausage, and cheese, and freezes them. In the morning, she pops one in the microwave for 1:45.

Kelly - Bonds with her baby by singing to her!

Amy M - The "refill" box! She keeps a box for each family member full of supplies they use regularly (ie. shampoo, toothpaste, diaper rash cream). When they run out of an item, they can check their box. This method cuts down on making those annoying trips to the store at the end of the day!

Melissa F - Her daughter was having a hard going to sleep at night, so she created a routine for bedtime. She gives her daughter a bath using lavender soap (great for calming), then she reads her a story. This routine has helped her relax and go to bed.

Anna P - A circle scarf is great way to have a nursing cover with you at all times -- and it's a good excuse to buy more scarves!

Summur B - She has 3 little girls who were all attached to their pacifiers. When each daughter turned 2, she'd have them go around the house with a bag and collect all the pacifiers. Then, they put them on their bedroom door at bedtime. She tell the girls that the "paci fairy" would come and take the pacifiers for babies that need them in exchange for a bag of goodies.

Robyn - Recipe for an awesome bathroom cleaner: 1 cup of heated white vinegar & 1 cup of blue Dawn dish soap. Pour it in a squirt bottle and spray your shower. You can leave it over night too if your shower is extra grimy. It works like a charm!

Kimberlee H - She had the motto, "If your kids could, they should!" Each child was able to do their own laundry by age 11.

Ciara F - Her husband gives her a day off every month. She is not allowed to come home until after the kids go to bed. (Pssst...Ciara - Can you have your husband pass the memo onto our hubbies too?! ;-) )

It Works for Me - Michele's Table

The Black Table was full of great ideas on Tuesday! Thank you, ladies, for all of your fun tips and mommy tricks! It was so enjoyable to listen to each of you speak! What a fun group you are!

Michele F. - She saves the kiddie Jamba Juice cups, and is on the look-out for coupons and deals! Jamba Juice has a "Buy 1, Get 1 FREE" deal sometimes. She'll get 2 larges, and divide them between the Jamba Juice cups! She's spent as little as $8 for her family of 6! That's a fun treat at a reasonable price!

Karen P. - "Ding Dong Doughnuts" - When her kids are in a cranky mood, she takes the opportunity to get them thinking about others. She has the kids think of someone they'd like to bless with doughnuts, or a gift basket full of goodies. They take it to their house, ring the doorbell, and watch the fun reaction! It always puts the kids in a great mood!

Loni D. - She prepares a 2 week meal plan! She gathers recipes, and gets 2 weeks worth of groceries at a time. It makes dinner time much easier!

Linnea T. - Her kids like movies, and she found a great way to organize DVD and save space with Discsox. You can find them on Amazon.com or the Container Store.

Sophia S. - Poo-pouri...Kinda self-explanatory! :-)

Lili L. - (1) Easy hair-do that saves time: Part your hair into 2 sections, twist them, and use a banana clip to secure it into place. Go about your day, and when it dries, you get beautiful curly waves. (2) Long trip = Pull-Ups for all the kiddos!

Regina B. - (1) Buckling her kids into their carseats was taking up too much time. She has her girls race to see who can buckle in first. She no longer has to buckle them in, and they get on the road quickly! (2) She doesn't like handling meat, but her family loves meatloaf. She has her girls mix all the ingredients together as one of their chores.

Joy S. - She prepares the night before for the day ahead of her (ie. lays out clothing, makes lunches, ect.) This makes allowances for the unexpected events....like chasing chickens on the loose! ;-)

Corrine C. - Her family loves visiting multiple pumpkin patches each fall. They end up with lots of pumpkins. Instead of keeping them all, she has the kids pass them out to people who might not go out and buy pumpkins (ie. elderly or young singles who live by themselves).

It Works for Me - Yesnia's Table

Yesenia J - To avoid using yucky restrooms at the park, bring a portable potty and a few diapers - size 6. Put the diapers inside the potty. After the child uses the potty, wrap up the diaper & throw it away!

Kelly D- Gives her daughter 2 outfits to choose from every morning. She gets to make the choice of what she wants to wear without a battle.

Dana M - Daughter doesn't like to wear socks. Dana buys solid colored socks and turns them inside out. The seams are on the outside where they can't "poke" her feet!

Amanda B & Amy D - Great minds think alike! Amanda & Amy buy the pouches of rotisserie chicken at Costco! It's great for putting together quick dinners  - such as enchiladas, soups, ect.

Carolyn S - Every parent needs a break! Carolyn and her siblings would take turns watching each others children on the weekends. Each couple would get a night or weekend to themselves!

"It Works For Me" - Sara McAvoy's Table - May

Sara - Made a Thomas The Train potty chart for her daughter to encourage her in potty training. Every trip that is successful she gets to put a sticker on the train...when the train is filled up she gets a prize.

Amy - A great tip for cutting preemie/newborn fingernails. Use a jeweler's loupe to magnify the nails & it leaves your hands free.

Megan - Plans her family's meals 1 month at a time. Makes dinnertime less stressful because you already know what you are having for dinner.

Melissa - Looks for easy recipes to make dinnertime a success.

Crockpot Chicken
1lb frozen chicken
2 cans black beans
1c brown or white rice
16oz salsa

Put all ingredients in crockpot & cook on low for 8 hours, or high for 4 hours.

Stacy - Decided to make her son's baby food to save money. Bought squeeze pouches to store the food in.

Shelly - Uses Shopkick app - earn points for scanning products while you are in the store. Lets her kids scan the items - earn gift cards. Also uses her notepad on her phone for her shopping list because then you have the shopping list with you when you are out doing errands.

Joy - Made peanut butter play dough for her kids to play with (peanut butter, honey & dry milk). Let kids play with it and can eat it also...put out snack items to go with it.

Ruth - Use stickers to aid in potty training. Spell words to describe character traits for motivation. Found stickers at Dollar Tree.

IT WORKS FOR ME - KIRSTIN'S TABLE - APRIL

Kirstin - Uses Prince Lionheart wipe warmer to keep warm washcloths on hand (uses the bamboo washcloths that come with it.

Samantha - On busy days when kids don't get outside to play use spray bottles to play water tag and then kids are nice & tired and will take naps.

Corinne - Has found 2 apps that pack in truths & Scripture if you only have a short break. "Jesus Calling" and "She Reads Truth." For "She Reads Truth" the app will be up & running soon, but the devotionals are available at shereadstruth.com or you can subscribe to the daily emails. Really powerful devotionals that get you knowing God's Word.

Erin - Oakdale MOPS - Trade with your friends for childcare, free & gives you time to get things done.

Tracy - Oakdale MOPS - Use a reward program for you children. Child needs 4 good days in 1 week to earn $ for a reward (lego set or doll?)

"It Works For Me" - Jodie's Table - April

Lili - Family naptime...make a game of it so the kids enjoy it...her older girls even love it when they are home from school.

Jodie - When you know you have a crazy week coming...make PB&J sandwiches ahead & freeze for lunches.

Deondra - Have your kids help you make veggies for snacks or dinner and they will love to eat them.

Kimberly - Recommends the book "Parenting With Scripture" - by Kara Durbin so that you can be more specific with your kids.

Michelle - Barbie doll mess - use over the door pocket organizer to put dolls in so the hair doesn't get so messed up...can put older girl's special dolls at the top so that younger sisters can't get to them.

Laura - Use frozen eggo waffles for teething. On a side note - she recommends a vegan organic diet as it has helped shrink her thyroid cancer.

Amy - Technique for teaching your children how to manage money...each child has 3 piggy banks (Jesus, savings, spending).

"IT WORKS FOR ME" - MARCH - SOMA'S TABLE

Soma - Kids are always asking for a treat when on the way home from school in the afternoon or driving to other activities. Created "Fun Friday" - Only stop for a treat 1x a week (on Friday), kids get to decide where, but they have to agree. **Also out of all of the parenting books read - favorite is "The 5 Love Languages Of Children" by Gary Chapman.

Jennifer - Suggests the book "Try And Make Me" by Ray Levy. Helps with the battles of strong willed children.

Linnea - Instead of having laundry baskets in everyone's room, she now puts 4 baskets in the bathroom and everyone sorts their own laundry. This makes it much easier to tell when there is enough for a load.

Caryn - Amazon Prime is $99/yr and is a great place to do your Christmas or birthday shopping especially if you are laid up. By paying for Amazon Prime you receive free 2 day shipping on every order no matter how big or small, you also receive access to many tv shows and I believe movies also for free.

Ciara - Has 2 boys and everything becomes a race. Sets the timer for 15 min & tells the boys to see who can pick up the most toys. Gives herself a chance to have a break or freshen up right before her husband gets home from work, results in the house being more picked up when husband walks through the door.

Karen - Has a son with Type "A" personality & always has to have an order to things. Made a poster board for kids to follow to get ready in the morning. Took a picture of each task that needs to be done in the morning & put on the poster board in the order which it should be done. Helps when someone else is watching the kids also & less questions in the morning.

Christine - Trying to foster a love of reading in her children. Keeps a small organizing tote in the backseat of her car and puts books in it for children to read and look at while riding in the car. Also keeps a smaller box in the tote to collect garbage.

Tricia - Has her older boys listen to books on CD during rest time. You can check them out from the library or download them to your ipad.

Linda - Shared a recipe for Microwave Caramel Corn that she has used for 25 years.

Microwave Caramel Corn

1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. Karo syrup (white)
1/2 tsp. salt
Combine the above ingredients in a glass 2 quart dish. Put in microwave and bring to a boil. Cook for 2 minutes more on high. Remove.

1/2 tsp. soda
3-4 quarts popped corn
optional almonds (toasted)

Stir in the soda. Pour into brown bag which popcorn is in and shake. Cook in bag 1 1/2 minutes. Shake and repeat if necessary. Pour out onto wax paper to cool.

"IT WORKS FOR ME" - MICHELE FAY'S TABLE - MARCH

"IT WORKS FOR ME"

Heather - Use Ziploc bags to pack kids clothes in for trips. Mark each bag for which day they will wear that outfit. Much easier to grab and go when getting ready for the day.

Michele - Doesn't like doing laundry and to make it easier puts underwear for all 3 boys in the same drawer (they all wear very similar sizes). The pants go in another drawer and the boys hang up the shirts...don't be particular on how they are hung, as long as they aren't on the floor.

Coby - Uses vinegar in her laundry to keep her whites white.

Julie - To save time getting ready in the morning, she gives her daughter a bath in her bathtub and can finish getting ready while her daughter is taking her bath.

Ruth - Uses her iphone to take a screenshot of a recipe or other item that she wants to keep when she is on Facebook or another online site.

Amy - When traveling with kids bring supplies for kids to figure out and follow the route you are taking. Bring maps, highlighters, calculators, crayons and pens, etc... Kids aren't allowed to ask the question "How much longer till we get there?" They may only ask questions to help them figure out how long it will take to get there, like "How fast are you going?"

Rachelle - Uses a squirt bottle filled with white vinegar to squirt in child's mouth when they talk back.

"It Works For Me" - Dana's Table - February

"It Works For Me"

Lisa - Make a point to take child out for lunch once a month with just you to spend quality time together.

Dana - Uses Safeway delivery for her groceries. Order online (free delivery with promotions offered), save a trip to the store, stay on budget & not tempted to splurge on items you see in store. Deliver into your house onto the counter for you :)

Lisa Lee - Uses a jar opener to her advantage to help her with many different items in the kitchen. Even to impress her husband and open his beer for him.

Emily - Puts GoGurt in the freezer and then gives it to her toddler to keep busy while she is helping the older kids.

Melanie - Made a chart for age appropriate chores for children to do around the house. When they finish a chore they get a ticket that goes into a jar and can earn little prizes (dollar store) for their help.

Rose - bought a $30 slide(it folds for storage too) which you can get at Walmart or Target and created a park inside her family room to entertain children during the winter months or when kids are sick and you can't get out of the house.

Cyndi

**If any of the above names are wrong please let me know as I try my best to get all of the correct info down quickly but need help with names at times :)

It Works For Me - Emilee's Table - January

"IT WORKS FOR ME" - JANUARY (Emilee's Table)

Nancy - To avoid bickering, let kids pick breakfast and lunch from list of options, also let kids take turns picking out movies.

Becky - To save time and sanity, no longer sort and fold socks. Put in child's room and they can choose to wear mismatched socks, or match them up themselves.

Melody - Has kids help unload dishwasher.

Dana - Has a tea party with 2 year old in order to get her to drink water.

Emilee - No whining rule in house. When child starts to whine, lead child out into garage and tell them "We don't whine in this house" tell them they can come back in when they stop whining.

Thank you ladies for sharing your tips & tricks!

Hi ladies,
Sorry for the delay on this month's "It Works For Me" post. Somehow it slipped my mind after last meeting that I needed to write this post :)

It Works For Me - Megan Barr's Table - November

It Works For Me

Megan - Uses magnetic picture calendar to avoid the continuous question "What are we doing today/tomorrow mom?" Here is the link that Megan provided on our MOPS Facebook page for a great example.
Heather - uses Lysol spray to take care of any pests that are keeping her girls awake or scaring them...including spiders or monsters that may be under the bed or in the closet.
Melissa - Uses plastic placemats that can be trimmed to customize size to line shelves in her fridge
Jodie - Doesn't iron, but uses Downy wrinkle releaser to take the place of ironing.
Sophia - Created a scavenger hunt game for her kids to play with objects that are located in the house to give her a few minutes of free time. Puts pictures of items in the house on cards & then places the cards under those certain objects in the house for the kids to follow the trail & find the next item. Give them a small prize at the end of the hunt.
Connie - In order to keep feet nice & moisturized and not dry & scratchy, put lotion on your feet at night, wrap a plastic bag around each foot & then pull on socks over bags. Do this one night a week for amazingly soft feet.

Thank you girls for all of your great tips!

It Works For Me - Sarah Crowell's Table - October

It Works For Me - Sarah Crowell's Table

Sarah C. - Give your child a few sprinkles (let them pick which kind) to make getting allergy shots, medicine or potty training easier.

Sue - Interrupt Rule: teach children not to interrupt by having them put their hand on your arm or leg to get your attention when you are mid-conversation or on the phone, acknowledge them by putting your hand over theirs and then when you have a break ask what they would like to ask you or tell you.

Jill - In order to get your children moving in the morning when they don't want to wake up, tell them they need to get up and use the bathroom and then they can lay down for another 10 minutes when they are done...usually by the time they are done in the bathroom they are awake enough to not want to lay down again.

Christina - When your kids ask for a soda, mix together sparkling water and a little bit of juice.

Emily - To avoid forgetting to bring diapers and pajamas into bathroom for after bath time, store a few sets of pj's and some diapers right in the bathroom.

Amy - "Happiest Baby On The Block" is a great book when you are raising young children, suggests using white noise to help your child sleep - Make a CD with hair dryer noise.

Yesenia - Teach your child to say "No Thank You" when they don't want to do something or play with someone, it sounds much more polite. Use a "No Thank You" spoon at the dinner table: if your child doesn't want to eat something that you are serving they may say "No Thank You" to that specific dish and then they still get a teaspoon size serving...mommy and child both win!

Grace - If you bring your husband lunch now and then or even make him lunch to take with, put love notes or encouragement notes in with their lunch to brighten their day. When your kids are having a rough day with their behavior, give them hugs and kisses anyway and tell them you love them...it will make them want to do better.

Della - To help prevent diaper rash, keep a blow dryer next to changing table and shoot a blast of cold air on their bottom before you put the new diaper on to get rid of the moisture and avoid accidents while you let them run around the house to try and air out their bottoms with no diaper on.

Thank you ladies for all of your great tips!

It Works For Me... Michelle Manuel's table - September

"It Works For Me"

Teresa A. - Use a black sharpie to erase your grey hair

Andrea W. - Cookbook to make veggie purees to mix in with your meals so that your family members who don't like veggies will still be eating them without even knowing it! **I will see if I can get the titles of the books from her and update the blog with them later :) The books are Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld and The Sneaky Chef by Missy Chase Lapine. Andrea also let me know that they are both available at the Stanislaus Co. Library.

Katie P. - Makes her own coffee creamer to cut down on cost. Mix together one can of sweetened condensed milk and one can full of your regular milk in a shaker, add 2 Tbsp. of flavoring of your choice (vanilla or almond suggested) mix together & keep in refrigerator.

Renee R. - To keep her 22 month old daughter busy in her crib after nap time, she sneaks books into her crib while she is sleeping so her daughter can play with them when she wakes up.

Michelle M. - Use shaving cream to keep your kids entertained. You can squirt some on the bathtub wall to keep them busy or even on toys outside and they can use to clean...makes them smell good too!

Courtney V. - To help kids stay on track and accomplish task of cleaning up toys, use a song they are familiar with and tell them their toys need to be picked up by the end of the song.

Laura B. - Buys frozen chicken at the grocery store, throws in crock-pot on low when she gets home and cooks for approximately 8 hours. Remove from crock-pot and shred, then put into 2 cup portions and store in freezer to have ready for meals during the week.

Cyndi D. - Re-use foaming hand soap dispenser and refill with approx 1" or 1 1/2" of dish soap and then gently fill with warm water and slowly mix together. Keeps cost down and easier for kids to wash their hands.

Lacee K. - Fool proof recipe to make Salmon that she found on Pinterest. Drizzle salmon filet with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, put into a cold oven, then turn on the heat to 400 degrees. Twenty-five minutes later, the salmon is absolutely perfect. Tender, moist, flaky! A no-fail method.

There you go ladies!
